Research Areas:

Leishmaniasis is a spectrum of diseases caused by the protozoan parasite Leishmania sp.Visceral leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania donovaniis the most fatal. High toxicity and cost of current treatments and the emergence of drug resistant parasites point to an urgent need for the development of new classes of drugs against Leishmania. In this context, novel drug targets have to be identified.A rational approach to develop new drugs is to identify metabolic differences between the host and parasite and exploit those proteins which are crucial for the survival of the parasite, at the same time not significant for the host as drug targets.

Our group is involved in characterizing proteins belonging to the purine salvage pathway of
Leishmania donovani. Many of these proteins are potential antileishmanial drug targets. Structural and functional characterization of these proteins will be carried out using protein engineering, X-ray crystallography, biophysical techniques, enzyme functional assays and bioinformatic tools. The group is also involved in similar study of kinases involved in carbon metabolism, proteins belong to trypanothione metabolism and methyl glyoxal detoxification pathways of L.donovani. Insights from these studies will open up avenues for the development of new anti Leishmanials.
